Woman of the Week – June

Asfar is continuing with the Woman of the Week campaign in June. Check out every week for a new entry and learn about the achievements of woman that have been often overlooked by history.

This week’s #WOTW is Gertrude Ederle! Gertrude was a competitive swimmer in a time period when women had little rights & were assumed to be weaker than men. Gertrude proved these beliefs wrong by being the fastest person to cross the English Channel, beating her male counterparts.

This week’s #WOTW is Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian mathematician and the first woman and first Iranian to be awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics!

This week’s #WOTW is Nadia Nadim! Nadia is a football player, originally from Afghanistan but plays for the Danish national team! Nadia and her family were forced to flee Afghanistan and ended up in Denmark.

Along with her excellent football skills, Nadia is also at Medical School and will soon become Dr. Nadia Nadim and continues to help those who are seeking asylum!
