My time with MIHI was a unique experience that allowed me to gain knowledge of the third sector, enhance my skillset and open my eyes to the challenges facing NGOs, particularly when the team is small and has access to limited resources. I obtained a first-hand insight into the impact these factors have on both the day-to-day operations and delivery of activities. I also took away from my experience the need to be aware of different communication styles. The differences in ways of working very much served to remind me of the importance of being adaptable, taking a flexible approach to work and exercising resilience.
One of the highlights of my traineeship with MIHI was running a weekly English Conversation Club in the community. Each week I chose a different topic to base the session on and put together a series of games, group activities and discussion questions. I was very impressed with how enthusiastic attendees were to make the most out of each session. Attendees actively participated in every session and were very motivated to improve their English communication skills. Being able to cultivate such a positive and supportive environment was a very rewarding experience.
Another task I oversaw was the creation of a series of social media posts aimed at empowering individuals in their job application journey through providing guidance on CVs, cover letters etc. I also contributing to efforts to enhance MIHI’s online visibility and engagement through crafting social media posts to celebrate global observances and showcase organisational activities.
Overall, reflecting on my time in Egypt, it is most definitely the people who have made the experience so great. I have been taken aback by the kindness and warmth I have encountered from Egyptians. Outside of MIHI, everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. I have met so many wonderful individuals and have been truly overwhelmed by the sense of community I have encountered in Alexandria. The people have made my time in Egypt so special and I am very grateful for the friends I have made here.
